Even though it has been a few weeks since we discussed being “haunted by history”, a conversation I was having with my grandmother reminded me of it. She and a few of my cousins do genealogy research fairly regularly and one of them had come across something unusual. They had found a book written about my great grandfather, her father, written by someone completely unrelated to our family. Apparently, his career as a music professor was much better know than we had assumed and now he has been immortalized as a feature in the history of South Dakota.

Hack #1
Over the weekend I watched a TV show on Comedy Central called, “The Nightly” hosted by Larry Wilmore. As I watched the show, Wilmore and his guest stars discussed serious issues which very much related to topics brought up in History 110 lecture thus far. The first clip references normalities and fertitlity rates in the 20th century. While the second clip shows a discussion about superclasses in America and oppression throughout the centuries. The third clip shows Penn Jillette stating that “statistics say, the more women in society and the more women in power, the more peace and the less violence you have.”
As I referenced topics talked about in lecture to this TV show, I began to realize the significance of the clip with Penn Jillette. As Professor Blum had just recently discussed the childish and savage-like behavior of our government in the past. The Department of Defense was created after both World Wars, in order to have a place that essentially supplies artillery and in return, deaths. The etymology of the word “defense” in this case is used in the opposite context. All this because of the assassination of an Austrian archduke? Which in the end created the question, what would foreign relations be like if more women were in power?

I was going through my music, and noticed the little parental advisory content bar in the corner when I was listening to a song. I automatically thought of the lecture we had about parental advisory and who should be the judge of the content of the song. However, I do not think this sign should be on this song because come on its RIhanna and its called “California King bed” What could be so bad?

During the reading in Hist racial segregation there was a big problem with African Americans they were not allowed in the same schools as white people, they could not vote or even sit in the front of the bus with the white people. Considering how people were segregated we have come a long way today there is so much diversity at San Diego State University, people do not have a problem hanging out with people of different races. Today everyone is considered an equal in getting the education that everyone is entitled to, difference is a thing of the past. Social change has been slow, but the persistence of fighting for what is right and deserved of all we have become a society of greatness.

As I was reading in Chapter 16 of the HIST book last week, the book was talking about how black women were being sexually violated and raped by white males in the south. The book then went on to point out how the freedom of African Americans was still extremely limited since the Civil War ended and that “change” wasn’t being made in their favor.
I thought that this was depressing and also extremely relevant to our lives as college students. We have had multiple sexual assault/ rape issues on our campus in this year alone and other universities in the United States have had similar instances. People everywhere are still having bits of their freedom stripped away by acts of sexual violence. It’s sad to discover that this was and still is an issue in America.

Last week I was watching Australian Open and this is a picture of one of the arenas. This one is used as the center court during the tournament. The arena was named after the famous Australian tennis player Rod Laver due to his amazing history as a tennis player. Every tennis player who steps out to play a match on this court will think of him and what he achieved during his career.
HACK #1- The progressive era is #4ever
In our group last week, we talked about women in the Progressive Era. One of the biggest, and evidently one of the most problematic parts was the beginning of the fight for women’s reproductive rights. Margaret Sanger was one of the first pioneers of reproductive rights and an advocate for birth control. The fight for women’s right to choose is still just as comprehensive and controversial today as it was in the Progressive Era.
Margaret Sanger- one of the first advocates of women’s reproductive rights…

In my group last week, we were supposed to discuss how the North and South differed in terms of urbanization. Before the industrial age, most of California was literally just hills and empty land. Nowadays we drive down roads and suburbs that were built decades before we were born, yet we don’t think about it. These roads were built by men who quite literally broke their backs over them, yet we never stop to appreciate it.
