IMG_8057I’m so glad that Roe v. Wade ruled that women had the right to choose for themselves in the eyes of the law. Thank goodness pro-choice issues are no longer up for debate, right? Women are legally protected, aren’t they?

I put this flyer up on the bulletin board in my dorm. I chose a quote by Nelson Mandela because history is part of our education which has changed our world. Around the border I put pictures from every year of the Hist book to show how history has evolved over time.

Macro Hack

This image can originally be found in the movie “The Butler”, which came out in 2013. However this exact image was found at http://rebloggy.com/post/movie-black-girls-cinema-black-hair-cinematography-black-history-activism-black/68369435053. This snap from the film is 250 x 239 in size -there are a variety of other sizes- and was one of the first images to pop up when I typed in “black panther movement”. Andrew Dunn, the cinematographer for the film captured this strong image and created a powerful portrayal of the black panther movement and the strength of an African American woman during this incredible time in American history.

This particular image was added to the blog I discovered it on about a year and five months ago, and since then has gained 1,898 notes. It was originally seen in theaters and by all in 2013 when the film was released. The image is in good condition as it was originally on film and is very clear. It is drastically shrunk in size in comparison to other clips. This image is created as a remake to try and capture the intensity of those that were associated with the black panther movement and to fully capture the power and intense emotion of the 60’s-70’s. If this photo were to have been an original it would have been less clear as the cameras were not as technologically advanced as the one of today.

I chose this image to represent my discussion topics because I found that it showed so much power and intensity. With a woman placed in the middle holding the hand gun it demonstrated the equality of power amongst members of the black panther party and the respect they had for women that would stand up and fight for what they believed to be right. The men in the picture are shown with no smiles, but with serious faces and fists in the air, a major symbol for black power during this time. This image captured the severity of this movement as it made a shift from those protecting black communities from police brutality to a movement of over 2,000 followers in support of a Marxist revolutionary group supporting black liberation and power.

hack #4

people-are-saying-bud-lights-new-tagline-promotes-2-18838-1430282715-10_big This was shown to me by my friend the other night and I thought about society as I read the slogan of Bud Light, “Perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night #upforanything”. Though I am fairly certain it was not intentional, this slogan made me feel as if the abuse of people, and women in particular, while intoxicated was okay and normal for our society. It really goes to show that the wording of ads are important, and can seriously affect the viewers.

o-PLAYBOY-MAGAZINE-570

I found this picture and article off http://history1900s.about.com/od/1950s/qt/Playboy.htm. I google searched Playboy’s first iconic magazine cover. I knew this magazine was quite scandalous at the time and I wanted to learn a little more about Marilyn Monroe and her image portrayed in this time period. This image is clearly scanned off this initial magazine and I have it in PDF form. The condition is clear due to the fact it’s been copied and scanned. An original would be expected to be worn out due to time. The size of this image is 95.8 KB and the dimensions are 570 x 786.
This image of her waving her hand was an original from Playboy in December of 1953 but the nude inside centerfold was purchased from a local printer who made calendars. A fun fact about this first edition is that it doesn’t have a date on the cover because he didn’t think there would be a second edition. That quickly changed after he sold 54,175 at 50c each. This edition is also the only one without Hugh Hefner’s name inside. The intent of the image is as stated, for the entertainment of men. Hefner joked about if a woman had picked it up that she should find the nearest male and simply hand it over because there was nothing she would want from such type of magazine. What seemed to be a simple magazine full of girls turned this young man’s life around and his company exploded with profit and success. He spawned a sexual revolution and no imitator has compared to this classic.
I chose this image due to a recent conversation I’ve had on the image of women today. The discussion revolved around how men tend to have a love-hate relationship with women who confidently portray their sexuality. They love looking but hate that they reveal everything right away. They love the confidence but see them as “easy.” I find the current trend contradicting and decided to research the beginning of one of America’s most prized lifestyle and entertainment magazines.

http://www.khou.com/story/news/2015/04/08/teacher-accused-of-giving-students-anti-muslim-handouts/25448467/

The image I choose to use for my MACRO hack is this about this Facebook post.  I was not the one who took this screenshot of this post, I actually came across this picture while scrolling through my Twitter timeline. I first came across this picture when I had seen someone quote tweeted it and was very upset that some people continue to tarnish the Islamic religion. Although I am unaware of who posted this status on their Facebook, the story “Teacher accused of giving students Anti-Muslim handouts” comes from a local news channel in Texas, where this incident took place. This incident happened very recently, the news website dates it as April 8th, 2015. What really intrigued me to use this picture for this assignment was how people are still so judgmental about other religions, especially Islam, in our modern society.

I believe this image was created (when someone screen shotted it) because they were very upset of the comments left behind on this post. The comments are all encouraging the teacher for he unacceptable action. The high school teacher had passed out an eight page handout entitled “Islam/Radical Islam (Did You Know)” and the material was not approved by the school district. Passing this unreliable/untrue information to high school student just enhances the stereotypes about Middle Eastern people.

I did more research on this issue on google and thats where I came across the video broadcast the news station did explaining this situation. This image had to have been created around the same time this information was aired, April 2015. The image is not pixelated, it is quite clear, and the size is 123 KB. It does not look like the image has been altered in any way through the course of it being spread around social media.

What made me choose to use this image for the MACRO hack was that I was appalled when I read those comments, like seriously?! We live in the United States and our first amendment includes freedom of religion and being able to express it. It’s honestly very annoying that a teacher would think that this is acceptable and is something that was needed to be taught to high school students. The teacher is not teaching them anything, instead she is filling the kids heads with lies. The handout talks about Sharia Law, terrorism, jihad, even beheadings and “If taken hostage by radical Islamists, what to do”. Like are you kidding me, what Muslim person will take you hostage! While many people were upset that the teacher had done this, the people who commented on this post in this image were praising her, they need help. Seeing those comments and what the post was about really drew me to do more research to find out what actually happened.

Screen Shot 2015-04-25 at 6.27.30 PM

I chose this photo because it was taken during a celebratory occasion. However beneath the surface, much more was going on. The image above is a screenshot of rappers Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg attending the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996 at the Radio City Music Hall. I found the image through searching “Tupac Shakur” on the website Corbis, a digital image company. The search brought up various photos of Tupac, but I felt this photo had the most context. The link of the photo is, http://www.corbisimages.com/Search#q=Tupac+Shakur. It was taken by Mitchell Gerber on September 1, 1996 to document those who attended the MTV Video Music Awards. It was also used to attract audiences into watching the ceremony because such big celebrities were in attendance. The image appears to reflect its original condition because of the way it has been digitally preserved. It is fairly clear and easy to detect those in the image as well as the setting. The image at its maximum size is 25 MB.

The photo was originally captured in the mid 1990s. This was a time of civil unrest for Americans in which there were battles between gangs in LA as well as between the Westside and Eastside of the U.S.. Tupac Shakur was an immensely iconic figure of the time because he was seen as one of the main representatives of the West Coast. As seen in the photo, he is flashing the west side sign, declaring his association with California. To his left, Snoop Dogg is flashing another gang sign at the camera. They both reflected their lifestyle in this situation and brought the aura of the urban streets to the public. Before this, it was much more controversial to be seen affiliated with gang signs. The two rappers broke the mold in openly declaring their affiliations in such a public setting and being unapologetic for it.

Snoop Dogg, also a very critical leader of rap music, and Tupac were viewed as a powerful team. This is probably one the the most important images of them because it shows that no matter the occasion, they stayed true to their west coast roots. The two are also dressed up in suits. Looking closely, you can see the jewelry they are wearing on their fingers. This, though a minor detail, is important because they were known for being extremely wealthy. They used their wealth to promote their west coast lifestyle and attract the support and attention of the public. They were an embodiment of the American Dream because they showed that they could reach the top of society despite the racial tensions of the 1980s and 1990s. They were also trailblazers in changing the fabric of society. They made it okay to be from a less wealthy background and proved that with enough focus and dedication, one could work their way to the top. All eyes were on them because of the impact they had on rap music. They were leaders in the genre and without them, the face of rap would be incredibly different.

This is still incredibly relevant to today because now more than ever, we see rappers go to award ceremonies decked out in jewelry. They too flash signs at the camera to show their affiliations and this originates back to the photo of Snoop Dogg and Tupac taken almost 20 years ago. They broke the wave of society by being more rough around the edges and harsher in their music. The two west coast rappers were proof that America was ready and accepting of change in terms of music, fashion, and mentality. Their influence remains pertinent because it transcends that moment in time from the 1990s to remain current and iconic to this day.
