In a statement to the United States Senate, Ronald J. Daniels, current President of Johns Hopkins University stated, “We created modern medical education, with its synthesis of research education and patient care, and we are the home of the first research based school of public health.”  Before the 1900’s, medical schools in the United States were sub par to say the least.  The only requirements to attend medical school were the ability to read and write.  Most medical students studied at trade  schools, which were profitable institutions.  Upon the opening of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the School of Medicine, Hopkins redefined entrance requirements and shaped an upgraded medical school curriculum that would change the pace of medicine in the United States for centuries. This was the first time in history that medical school included a collaboration between bedside teaching and laboratory research.

HACK #3 – Learning Similar Things

So this week, my hack is of one of my closest friend and I having a conversation. We were having a casual conversation when she brought up different countries and what they did. She brought up Russia and talked about atomic bombs and stuff, and it was really ironic since we just talked about atomic bombs this week. It was also ironic since she was also learning about the Cold War when she goes to school in Connecticut. It’s really fascinating when someone far away from you can be learning the same thing as you.

The anti-war soundtrack of the Vietnam War helped to fuel college activism among the youth, but neglected to keep the blame on the pro-war politicians instead of the many troops returning to an unwelcome homecoming. This era in US history was turbulent and was divided heavily by social class. One of the social issues was about the draft. John Fogerty wrote the song “Fortunate Son” on precisely this and my essay will discuss SES of the draft and compare the working-class with the “initial protesters [that] were university students with student deferrals from the draft.” (Shultz, 471)

Hack #3

us-mexico-borderThis week in my RWS class, my professor discussed how borders have more than just one interpretation. Not only is there a physical separation, but as well as a cultural separation, spiritual separation, and an emotional separation. This concept reminded me of when Professor Putman discussed the Soviet border and their struggle to secure it throughout the Cold War.

For as long as we have records, music has always been apart of our culture. Whether to express emotions, have fun, or even when involved with ritual ceremonies, music has always been both a barometer measuring and responding to society’s problems and possibilities. Throughout the twentieth century, we witnessed the emergence of a diverse range of musical styles and genres. Focusing on one in particular, I’m going to look at how psychedelic music influenced the culture of the 1960s and in-turn, had an enormous impact on the way things are in the modern era.

Essay: George W. Bush’s presidency: Good or Bad?

My essay is on the effects of George W. Bush’s presidency in the long term. My background on this topic sparked from a joke somebody made to me one day. The joke was something along the lines of “Not even Texas likes George W. Bush”. That made me really curious as to why everybody expresses a dislike for him. Even though he was a president during my lifetime, I never took the time out of my day to educate myself on why he was a bad president. Many people blame him for the conflicts in Iraq and many are quick to point out his excessive amounts of vacation days. Because of this, I want to find out why people perceive him as a bad president and what were the long term effects on America due to his decisions.

For my essay topic, I chose the Roaring Twenties. Throughout my essay, I will be focusing primarily on the technology that the twenties consisted of, their culture throughout this time frame, and how women’s role in society changed. One of the main technological innovations that the twenties experienced was the development of the assembly line, which allowed sped up in production. In addition, the Roaring Twenties experienced “a dramatic expansion of popular culture” (Schultz, 376). This era experienced a growth in movies, music, and sports. Women also experienced a more active role in society. The right to vote with the Nineteenth Amendment became the stepping stone for many feminists and activists to promote women’s rights. Women became known as “the new women” with their political success and they even began to dress differently.

Hack #3: The Dang Commies

AmerUndrComm

I think the funniest thing about America was how scared they were about communists at one point. The Red Scare in the 1950’s was one of those moments. It seems so justified since the Soviet Union was very powerful around that moment in time and the Cold War was going on too. Even now there are some government forms that ask you if you have ever been affiliated with a communist party. Yet it’s so hard to believe that America and it’s government wouldn’t be able to handle a few communists in such a crucial moment. Surprisingly enough, the ideals of communism aren’t all that hard to agree with. I just don’t see why there is so much hate for an idea that is good in theory.

The atomic car, interesting that the idea is back. It’s said this car can run for a hundred years on one tank of fuel. It runs on Thorium which is a radioactive element discovered in 1828.

Hack #3: Then and Now

We have seen examples of propaganda in Hist and probably in many diverse ways. Just the other day I saw a remake of the famous “We Can Do It”, you know the one with the a woman flexing with a red bandana? It was up in the AL building outreaching to students. It got me thinking about the ways the early US Air Force would recruit new mechanics, or even sell US Bonds to fund the wars. I’m comparing the old and the new, but the new is only advertising nostalgia and my geeky-side.
